A task is unclear? Ask one good question.
At work, you do not need to understand every detail immediately. Strong communication means checking the goal before you start.
The situation
Your manager says: “Could you update the report for tomorrow?” You do not know which numbers matter or who will read it.
Three useful questions
1. Could you clarify which figures are the priority?
2. Just to confirm, is this report for the client meeting?
3. What time would you like the first version?
💡 **Just to confirm ...** sounds professional. It shows that you want to get the task right.
When the deadline is tight
Do not only say that you need more time. Explain what you can deliver and ask what matters most.
- I can finish the summary by tomorrow morning.
- For the full report, I would need one more day.
- Which part should I focus on first?
Mini-dialogue
Manager: Can you check the presentation before lunch?
You: Of course. Should I focus on the content or the design?
Manager: The content, especially the last two slides.
You: Great. I will send you my notes by 11:30.
Your next sentence
Save words such as clarify, priority and focus. Then practise the situation with the tutor: ask one clear question and agree on the next step.
